GOOGLE GIVES NOD TO “GOOGLE ME” THE MOVIE

Jim Killeen’s documentary, chronicling a planet-wide quest for his many and mysterious “selves,” is given stamp of approval by search-engine juggernaut.

Hollywood, CA – Googlehas allowed filmmaker Jim Killeen use of its moniker for his in-production feature Google Me. “…we did give permission to use our name,” said a Google spokesperson. “Since the filmmakers actually use our search engine to conduct research, we think it’s an accurate use of our mark.”

Having become so much a part of our everyday lives, “Google” has officially been inducted into the English language. Merriam-Webster defines it as “to use the Google search engine to obtain information about (as a person) on the World Wide Web.”

“It all started when I Googled my own name…” said Killeen of his movie. And who in today’s day and age hasn’t engaged in just such an activity in a moment of idle “webbing.” The difference here that the movie’s maker actually followed up on his findings by not only contacting those sharing his namesake but also traveling to whatever remote location was called for to meet and interview the subjects of his search.

Whether an effort to defeat the innumerable self-imposed social barriers erected since the advent of the Internet or out of sheer and simple curiosity, the result is nevertheless telling and enormously entertaining – as well as a provoking commentary on today’s society and how technology has transformed our lives.

Jim Killeen, likely to become a “household name” due to the part his plays in the film, is both the director and star of Google Me. By employing the single yet powerfully intimate common denominator of a person's name, Google Me succeeds in exploring the philosophical subject of identity itself as well as the underlying human conditions that unite us all.
